The Lie You Tell Yourself: You're Not Who You Say You Are
Day 4 of the 15-Day Writing Challenge: Exploring Authenticity Through Poetry
Hey Digital Alchemists,
As part of my 15-day Writing Challenge, I’ve been pushing myself to explore different forms of expression. Today, I’m stepping out of my usual writing style and sharing something a bit different—a poem
Yup a poem …
I don’t usually write poems, but I’ve been reflecting on the theme of authenticity, and this poem, “The Lie You Tell Yourself: You're Not Who You Say You Are,” emerged from those thoughts. It’s a raw, honest look at the stories we tell ourselves and the gap between our words and actions.
Writing this was a challenge in itself, and I’m curious to hear what you think. Does it resonate with you? How do you bridge the gap between what you say you want and what you actually do?
I hope this poem sparks some reflection for you, as it did for me.
Let’s dive in…
The Lie You Tell Yourself: You're Not Who You Say You Are
But the truth is clear,
in every move you make,
Your actions speak louder,
and they reveal your true stake.
You say so much,
but do so little,
The lie you tell yourself—
it’s not so subtle.
You say you want to lose weight,
but sweets you always eat.
You say you want to write,
but your pen remains discreet.
You say you want awareness,
but your mind is on repeat.
But the truth is clear,
in every move you make,
Your actions speak louder,
and they reveal your true stake.
You say so much,
but do so little,
The lie you tell yourself—
it’s not so subtle.
You say you want success,
but hard work you evade.
You say you want true love,
but your heart’s wrapped in a blade.
You say you want adventure,
but at home you’ve always stayed.
But the truth is clear,
in every move you make,
Your actions speak louder,
and they reveal your true stake.
You say so much,
but do so little,
The lie you tell yourself—
it’s not so subtle.
Wake up to the reality;
the mirror never lies,
Your life’s a reflection
of the choices you let slide.
You say you don't have time,
but that’s just a disguise,
For you find time to scroll,
to drift, and live lies.
You say you want change,
but cling to comfort's side,
The lie you tell yourself—
it’s time to decide.
You say you want to grow,
but challenges you flee.
You say you seek out joy,
but misery’s where you be.
You say you long for closeness,
but you keep folks out at sea.
But the truth is clear,
in every move you make,
Your actions speak louder,
and they reveal your true stake.
You say so much,
but do so little,
The lie you tell yourself—
it’s not so subtle.
So stop the lie,
it’s time to be real,
Align your actions
with what you truly feel.
You say you want it,
then start the climb,
Because the lie you tell yourself—
it’s wasting your time.
Now, it’s your turn. Take a moment to reflect on your own life—where are the gaps between your words and your actions?
What lies if any have you been telling yourself, and what’s the first step you can take to close that gap?
Leave a comment, share your thoughts, and let’s hold each other accountable.
